Where can you get the best churros in Madrid?
Chocolatería San Gines has a well-deserved title of serving up the best churros in Madrid.
Churro taste test
Personally, I’m the type of girl that likes her churros covered in both sugar and cinnamon. The churros from San Gines come with a serving of hot chocolate and sugar on the side, so at first, I was a little sceptical if I would like them. But after the first two bites, all doubt left my mind! They were the right texture, not too chewy or thick and combined with the chocolate dipping, it was divine. The hot chocolate comes in a large mug. I had so much leftover I was even tempted to drink it afterwards, although, it would probably have been too rich for me on its own. But if you are a chocolate lover, you’ll be getting every penny’s worth.
Affordability
The menu is fairly affordable, the most popular choice is to order 6 churros which comes with hot chocolate and sugar for €4.50. (There are 2 orders in the photo, placed onto one plate).
Atmosphere
It is within a short walk of Plaza Mayor, however in a sweet side street. It feels slightly hidden away from the world and the architecture of the building completes that feel. You can sit inside, outside or have it as a takeaway and there are two different shops to separate eat-in and takeaway options. It can be fairly busy but was quite quiet when we went at around 9 pm. It is currently open between 8 am-11:30 pm, but it was open 24 hours a day before COVID-19.
